One of the best parts of the Christmas season is receiving cards from friends and family. Each card is a small reminder that someone took the time to think of you. Yet so often, those cards end up stacked on a counter or scattered around the house instead of being enjoyed.

Years ago, I saw a simple idea in someone else’s home, and it stayed with me. I’ve been using it ever since because it’s easy, affordable, and turns your cards into part of your holiday decor.

What You’ll Need

Ribbon (any color or width you like)

A stapler

Optional: a decorative bow for the top

How to Create a Christmas Card Wall Display

This idea couldn’t be easier:

Attach the ribbon vertically to a wall, door, or cabinet

Add a bow at the top if you want a festive touch

Staple each card to the ribbon as they arrive

Continue down the ribbon to create a simple display

Why I Love This Idea

There are so many reasons this works so well:

Keeps all your Christmas cards in one place

Makes it easy to actually see and enjoy them

Adds a cozy, personal touch to your holiday decor

Takes up very little space

Every time you walk by, you’re reminded of the people who sent them and the connections that matter most during the season.

Make It Your Own

This display is easy to customize:

Hang multiple ribbons if you receive lots of cards

Switch ribbon styles or colors each year

Reuse the idea for birthday cards, photos, or special notes

Cleanup is just as simple—take down the ribbon and store your cards to save for the future.

Sometimes it’s the simplest ideas that make the biggest difference. This is a great way to slow down, enjoy the season, and appreciate each card instead of letting it get lost in a pile. I hope this inspires you to try it in your own home and create a little extra holiday warmth this Christmas. 🎄💌

we share tips that make life safer, smarter, and more heartfelt—for you and your furry family too.

Today’s post comes from a deeply personal place, and if you’re a pet parent, it’s one you need to read.

💔 A Tragic Loss That Taught Us a Powerful Lesson

Before we had Luke, our golden retriever, we had Ben—another sweet golden with a heart of gold. He was healthy and happy until, one day, everything changed.

We opened a new bag of his usual holistic dog food, and within days, Ben became violently ill. What we didn’t know at the time was that that very food was part of a recall—one that tragically cost Ben his life.

We later discovered we weren’t alone. Other pet parents were going through the same devastating experience with the same brand. Had we known sooner, we might have been able to save him.

🛑 The Pet Food Resources You Should Know About

If you have a dog or cat, we strongly encourage you to stay informed. Two incredibly helpful websites we’ve discovered are:

DogFoodAdvisor.com

TruthAboutPetFood.com

Both offer free newsletters, alert you to pet food recalls, ingredient warnings, lawsuit updates, and provide ratings and rankings for hundreds of brands. These tools are invaluable for making informed choices.

🧼 Clean Bowls = Healthy Pets

According to the American Kennel Club, pet bowls are among the germiest items in your home. Left unwashed, they can harbor bacteria and slimy biofilm that leads to serious illness.

Key bowl-cleaning tips:

Wash food and water bowls daily with hot, soapy water.

Wet food residue encourages more bacteria than dry food.

Replace water daily—never just “top it off.”

Keep your pet’s water bowl as clean as your own glass!

A neighbor once told us how his dog almost died just because he never washed the water bowl—only added fresh water on top. It was a wake-up call we never forgot.

🐶 Small Dogs? Buy Small Bags

Here’s another lesser-known tip: If you have a small dog, avoid buying large bags of dog food. It takes them too long to finish, and the food can go rancid or stale before they’re done.

Large dogs = large bags.
Small dogs = small bags, always.

🧡 Final Thoughts

We share these lessons in honor of Ben, and in the hope of saving other pets from preventable harm. Please take the time to learn more about your pet’s food, clean their bowls regularly, and sign up for pet food alerts.

And if this post helped you—or could help someone you know—please share it and subscribe to Sonja’s Way for more tips that protect what matters most.

oday, we’re diving into one of my favorite summer joys: growing juicy, delicious tomatoes!

After getting so many compliments on my tomato garden this year, I thought it was time to spill the (tomato) sauce and share the tricks that made all the difference!

🌱 Indeterminate vs. Determinate Tomatoes: What’s the Difference?

Let’s start with the basics. When you’re picking out tomato varieties, you’ll notice two types: determinate and indeterminate.

Determinate tomatoes ripen all at once—great if you want a huge harvest for canning or sauce.

Indeterminate tomatoes, on the other hand, produce fruit all season long, which means fresh tomatoes week after week. I personally love indeterminate because it keeps the garden exciting all summer!

✨ Epsom Salt = Happy Tomato Plants

This one is a game changer! Tomatoes love magnesium, and the easiest way to give them a dose is with Epsom salt.

Mix a small spoonful into the hole when you plant your tomatoes.

Then, every two weeks, sprinkle another teaspoon around the base of the plant.

You’ll be amazed at how strong and vibrant your plants become. Mine are thriving thanks to this simple addition!

🐝 Pollinate by Hand (Yes, Really!)

Those delicate yellow flowers on your tomato plants need pollination to turn into fruit. If your garden doesn’t attract many bees, don’t worry—you can step in!

Just gently tickle the yellow blossoms with your finger to simulate pollination. It’s a simple step that can boost your tomato yield big time.

✂️ End-of-Season Tip: Trim the Tops

As the growing season wraps up, your plant will keep growing upward… unless you cut off the tops.

Why? This redirects the plant’s energy to the tomatoes that are already forming, helping them ripen faster. Otherwise, you might end up with a jungle of green tomatoes that never turn red.

🦌 How to Keep Deer Away from Your Tomatoes

This year, we had an unexpected challenge—deer jumping the fence and munching on our plants! Luckily, we found scented deer repellent pods that kept them away. You hang them near your garden, and the scent deters deer without harming them or your plants.

It worked like a charm!

🌿 Final Thoughts

Growing tomatoes is part art, part science, and a whole lot of love. With these simple tips—from Epsom salt and hand-pollination to deer-proofing and end-of-season trimming—you’ll be on your way to a more fruitful harvest.

If you found this post helpful, please like, subscribe, and visit Sonja’s Way regularly for more down-to-earth gardening and money-saving tips.

Let’s dive into the magical (and surprisingly easy) world of DIY herbal tinctures.

🌱 What Is a Herbal Tincture?

Herbal tinctures are concentrated herbal extracts made by soaking herbs in alcohol. The alcohol draws out the active compounds and preserves them, creating a powerful, natural remedy used for everything from boosting immunity to aiding digestion.

And the best part?
You can make them yourself—no special equipment or skills needed.

🧪 Why Make Your Own?

💰 Save money – A small store-bought tincture can cost as much as an entire bottle of vodka used to make dozens of your own.
🌿 Use fresh, homegrown or organic herbs – You know exactly what’s going into your body.
🧴 Make custom blends – Tailor your tinctures for your personal wellness needs.

🛠️ What You’ll Need:

Fresh or dried herbs (homegrown or store-bought)

But not anymore! Here’s a super easy hack I use to freeze meat in smart portions and stop the waste before it happens.

🥩 The Smart Way to Freeze Meats Without Waste

So here’s what I do:
Next time you’re about to toss those used produce bags from the grocery store—don’t! Those little plastic veggie baggies can be repurposed into portion-sized wraps for meat.

✂️ Cut the bags into smaller sections depending on what you need.

🧑‍🍳 For breakfast sausage, I use small cuts since I usually only cook a few at a time.

🥪 For lunch meats, I cut slightly larger sections to wrap enough for a few sandwiches.

Then I wrap the meat in those small baggies and place them into a labeled freezer-safe Ziploc bag. Now, whenever I need a serving, I can just grab one portion and go!

💡 Why This Freezing Tip Works

✔ Saves Money – No more tossing half-used packs
✔ Saves Time – Pre-portioned, ready to cook
✔ Saves Space – Smaller packages fit neatly in the freezer
✔ Eco-Friendly – Reusing produce bags = less waste!

This small switch has helped me reduce food waste and keep more money in my wallet—and now it can help you too.

Living in Colorado, one thing is certain—it’s dry, dry, dry! With almost no humidity, we go through bottles of lotion like water in the desert. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably reached the bottom of a lotion bottle, pumped it endlessly, and assumed it was empty.

But here’s the thing: it’s not.

That “empty” bottle still has plenty of lotion left—more than you’d think! Instead of tossing it, try this money-saving trick that’s ridiculously easy and super effective.

💡 The Lotion Bottle Hack That Saves You Cash

When the pump stops working and nothing more comes out, flip the bottle upside down. Let it sit that way for a day or two—gravity will do the hard work for you. All that leftover lotion trapped at the bottom will slide down toward the opening.

Once it settles, just transfer the lotion into a new container (or even your new lotion bottle). You’ll be amazed at how much is left inside. What you would’ve thrown away could last you days or even weeks longer!

I’ve done this over and over, and it doesn’t matter which brand of lotion I use—they all leave a lot behind. And check this out—this entire scoop of lotion came from the bottom of one so-called “empty” bottle.

💰 Why It Matters (And Why You’ll Love This Hack)

Think about how much money you’ve spent on lotion over the years… now think about how much of it you’ve accidentally tossed! Saving a few ounces per bottle really adds up. This simple trick means less waste, more savings, and a little extra satisfaction from being just that clever.

✅ Bonus Tip: Use a Small Spatula or Spoon

Once it’s upside down and settled, you can even use a little beauty spatula or small spoon to scoop out the lotion if it’s too thick to pour. You’ll get every last drop without the struggle.

🥴 The Milk Struggle Is Real

Not long ago, I was chatting with someone who mentioned they kept throwing away milk—even the small cartons—because they just couldn’t drink it fast enough. Sound familiar?

That’s when I dropped a tip that blew their mind… and it might just change how you buy milk forever.

🧊 Meet Shelf-Stable Milk: Your New Best Friend

Did you know there’s milk you can store on your pantry shelf until you’re ready to use it?

Yep! It’s called shelf-stable milk, and it comes in small cartons like this 6-pack of Horizon Organic Milk. It’s sealed, safe, and doesn’t need refrigeration until you open it. So you can keep it tucked away until you’re ready to pour.

In fact, I bought mine in March, and the expiration date isn’t until August. That’s months of peace of mind—no rush to use it up, no more waste!

✅ Why Shelf-Stable Milk Is a Total Game Changer

Long shelf life – No more spoiled milk after just a week

Perfect for emergencies – Great backup during power outages

Great for small households – Use only when you need it

Budget-friendly – Save money by not tossing unused milk

Whether you drink milk daily or just need it for recipes, this hack is a lifesaver. And it’s especially helpful in areas prone to blackouts or inconsistent refrigeration.

✨ Simple Tip, Big Impact

If you’ve ever sighed while dumping sour milk down the sink, give shelf-stable milk a try. It’s a smart switch that can stretch your grocery budget and reduce waste.

💬 Have you used shelf-stable milk before? I’d love to hear how it’s worked for you!

Let’s talk about eggs. Not scrambled or poached—but how to store them smarter and avoid waste. If you’ve ever mixed up your older eggs with fresh ones and played the “sniff test” roulette, this trick is for you!

💡 Stop Guessing: Know Which Eggs to Use First

With the high price of eggs today, anyway to prevent spoilage is important!

I used to try keeping older eggs separate from fresh ones in the fridge. I’d shuffle cartons, make mental notes, and still end up confused. Sound familiar?

Then I found a ridiculously simple solution: a Sharpie dot. That’s right. Just grab a Sharpie or any permanent marker, and place a small dot on the shell of your older eggs before putting them back in the fridge.

Now when I bring home new eggs, I simply load them into the tray, dot-free. When I’m reaching for breakfast or baking ingredients, I always know to use the dotted eggs first.

✅ Why This Egg Tip Works

Saves money – No more tossing out “mystery eggs” you’re unsure about.

Ever open a jar of pasta sauce, use half, and then toss the rest because you didn’t get around to finishing it in time? You’re not alone—and there’s a super simple solution that’ll save you money and reduce waste.

💡 The Problem with Leftover Sauces

We’ve all been there. You make spaghetti for dinner, use part of a jar of marinara, and the rest just…sits in the fridge. A few days go by, and now it’s got that funky smell—or worse, mold. Into the trash it goes.

Now multiply that waste over months or years. Yikes!

🧊 The Freezer-Friendly Solution

Here’s what I’ve started doing—and it’s made a huge difference:
Freeze your sauces in ice cube trays!

Yes, really. After dinner, I pour any leftover sauce into an ice cube tray. Once it’s frozen solid, I pop the cubes into a labeled freezer bag. That’s it!

Whenever I need just a small amount of sauce—maybe for a solo lunch, dipping, or to flavor a quick meal—I grab a cube or two, and boom! No waste. No guilt. No extra trips to the store.

🍛 It’s Not Just for Spaghetti Sauce

This trick works for so many types of sauces and even soups:

Red curry sauce

Enchilada sauce

Tomato paste

Homemade broth

Cheese sauces

Soup

And more!

Whether you’re cooking for one or feeding a family, this is a smart, space-saving hack that’ll stretch your budget and make meal prep faster.

💰 Why You’ll Love This Tip

✅ Saves money by reducing waste

✅ Super easy—takes less than 5 minutes

✅ Perfect for small households or solo meals

✅ Keeps your freezer organized

✅ Prevents that “oops, it went bad” moment

🥄 Pro Tip: Label & Date It!

Be sure to label your freezer bags with the sauce type and date. Sauces typically last 2-3 months in the freezer and still taste fresh when reheated.

Ready to Save Money the Easy Way?

Hi friends! I’m Sonja, and today on Sonja’s Way, we’re diving into a super simple but often misunderstood topic that can save you tons of money—understanding “Use By” and “Best By” dates on your food products.

What Do “Use By” and “Best By” Dates Really Mean?

Contrary to popular belief, those little dates printed on food packaging are not always expiration dates. In fact, most of the time, they’re just guidelines set by manufacturers for peak freshness. That’s right—your food is probably still good long after the date on the box.

Here’s the difference:

Expiration Date = For products like medications and some baking items. Don’t mess with these.

Best By/Use By Date = A suggestion for best flavor or texture—not safety.

One Shopping Tip That Can Save You Instantly

When buying in bulk or stocking up during sales, always check those dates. Items sitting side by side on the shelf can have months of difference in their “Best By” dates—even if they’re the same product!

What I do? I take a permanent marker and write the Best By date on the front of each item when I unpack groceries. This helps me use the oldest items first and avoid wasting food (and money!).

Still Tasty? Check Online Before You Toss

Before throwing anything out, check StillTasty.com—one of my favorite resources! It tells you how long foods actually last past the “Best By” date. Martha Stewart’s site also has helpful food storage info for home cooks.

Save Money, Waste Less, Live Better

Understanding how food labeling works is a simple but powerful way to stretch your grocery budget. Don’t let dates scare you into wasting perfectly good food.

If you love practical, money-saving tips like this, be sure to subscribe to Sonja’s Way on YouTube and hit the like button—we’ve got tons of useful tricks coming your way!
